Would You Make This Deal?
The 49ers may trade the first overall pick to the San Diego Chargers for their first round pick from a year ago, Phillip Rivers? Unfortunately, the rumor is on ESPN's Insider page so I can't find any more details without paying for it. I guess this trade makes sense. Most people feel that Rivers was a better QB coming out of college than Rodgers or Smith, who are both underclassmen. On top of that, Rivers has a year of NFL knowledge under his belt. In that regard, I can see him being a more attractive option than either of the draft guys. I haven't heard anyone bring up the salary cap consequences so I guess trades don't work the same way roster cuts do.
Well, that first paragraph was written yesterday and since then, the rumor has been poo-pooed upon. Blogger had problems with my account so I couldn't get this on before this became obsolete. Too bad, I felt a trade like this would really spice up the draft. It seems like everyone's willing to stand pat right now and take whatever is available. Most would even prefer to trade down. With a shake-up at the top and a different player other than Rodgers or Smith going first, it might require a team like Minnesota to move up to get what they need.
What do you guys think of this rumor? Do you think there's anyone worth getting with the top spot? Do you like Braylon Edwards or Mike Williams more? Any other juicy trade rumors out there?
Woody!
